In this brand new and ever-changing world, being able to effectively manage your time and tasks is more important than ever to make sure your workday is as productive as possible. Here are five strategies that can help you take control and accomplish more.
PRIORITIZE: Keep a running “to-do” list and highlight the items that are a priority. Take a couple minutes at the start of your day to plan your priorities, including when you will work on them. I tend to do the most important tasks in the morning or at the end of the day.
FOCUS ON ROUTINE: Set up some regular routine meeting times with your supervisor, colleagues and clients, whether you are working remotely or in an office. This communication helps you stay focused on your goals, schedules, and deadlines.
SET GOALS: Create deadlines for yourself for high-priority projects and new job objectives. Break goals down into the action steps necessary to accomplish them. For example, if your goal is to finish that report by Monday, plan to have the first draft written by the previous Wednesday. Then schedule time for that task.
BLOCK DISTRACTIONS: Block emails, phone calls and social media when you’re working on high priority tasks by putting your phone on silent or turning off email notifications on your computer.
REMEMBER TO TAKE BREAKS: Go on a brief walk, chat with a friend, or check social media. You need that down time to refresh yourself, clear you mind, and to stay alert.
Simple changes like these help you save time and work more efficiently. Not only can that help you achieve your work goals, but you will feel less stressed, which is good for your mental health and your work-life balance.
