You have been interviewing consistently for six months. The resume is doing its job and getting noticed by the recruiter, applicant tracking system or a combination of both, but you haven’t made it beyond the first round of interviews. Does this sound familiar? The JCS Career Center can help you pinpoint what you are doing right and wrong with the job search/interviewing process.
A JCS Career Counselor can help determine what actions are preventing you from landing your dream job. Through our personalized career coaching sessions and tailored workshops, we can assist you in identifying what you need to improve. Here are some helpful tips to help ensure you make it beyond the first interview:
- Wear appropriate attire for the face to face interview. We recommend you wear business appropriate clothing which includes, a matching suit or another business appropriate outfit. It is always better to be overdressed in an interview setting. However, some industries tend to be more causal, like marketing, which wearing a business causal outfit might be more fitting.
- Send thank you notes. It is always a good idea to either email or mail a thank you note. It shows the employer that you are enthusiastic about the position and it reminds the hiring manager why you are the most qualified.
- Prepare responses for the interview. At the Career Center, we recommend putting the time and effort into developing thoughtful answers to common interview questions. It can help you feel more confident in an already anxious situation. Crafting thoughtful responses, to include relevant information which ordinarily might be forgotten, is a way to separate yourself from the competition.
- Conduct research on the prospective company to be used in the interview and as a networking tool. It’s always a good idea to see if your network has connections with the organization. Maybe someone in your network knows the hiring manager-imagine how that can help land this job! Also, obtaining current statistics and historical information can help you form questions for your potential employer and serve as an ice breaker in an interview. It shows the employer that you are a dedicated employee and interested in working for the company.
