When Jon Davidov volunteered for a
phone-a-thon to benefit The Associated back in 1998, he could barely hear the ringing of the telephones over the pitter patter of his heart. It was there he had the good fortune of sitting beside Robin, the young woman who, two years later, would become his wife.
Fast forward nearly two decades, and now the Davidovs are teaching 17-year old Lucy and
15-year old Owen the importance of giving back.
“We understand that The Associated is such an important part of the community. We want our kids to appreciate their Jewish heritage and realize they’re part of a community that’s bigger than the two of them.”
Jon wasn’t much older than a kid himself when the Baltimore native decided to get involved. After returning home from college, he thought The Associated would be a good way to meet people – and it was – providing social as well as business contacts for a young man starting out in the financial industry.
His first event was a Mini-Mission which took him on a tour of Jewish Baltimore and introduced him to his mentor, the late Michael Lapidus, who Jon describes as “an incredibly awesome guy who took me under his wing and showed me what The Associated was all about.”
Jon then completed a Young Leadership Program which led him to the Board of Jewish Vocational Services (JVS). There he served as the agency’s treasurer, then 1st vice president, which was the position he held in 2008, when JVS and three other agencies combined to form Jewish Community Services (JCS). When you add it all up, Jon Davidov has been with the agency in various capacities for the past 20 years.
As for what Jon hopes to accomplish now that he’s president of the JCS Board, he shares his concern for older adults, wanting to ensure that JCS has the financial supports in place to address the needs of this growing population. He points to other communities that are leveraging technology to help older adults in various ways: from providing items that make everyday living a little easier, to life-saving heart monitors that can warn someone of their own elevated fall risk, to virtual reality glasses that can whisk someone off to stimulating adventures in the comfort of their own home.
“There are a lot of cool things out there, he explains. “I’d like to explore using technology to transform the world for our older clients and leverage the funds available. Technology can change lives.”
It appears that, as long as he’s helping people, Jon Davidov feels right at home. “I, along with a lot of others in this community, have been very fortunate, and we have an obligation to help those less fortunate than us. There are people who are going through very tough circumstances. It’s hard for them to ask for help, but that’s what JCS is all about, helping people in a judgement-free way. That’s what speaks to me about the agency, we are there for everyone in the community, especially those who need the most help.”
