Allison J. Magat, President
“I am a donor and a recipient,” Allison Magat says of Jewish Community Services. “I want people to understand that they are not two different groups; they are one in the same. We are all strong, and we are all vulnerable at times. JCS is here for everyone.”
As the new President of the Board for Jewish Community Services, Magat hopes to share the message that all of us will need services provided by JCS at some point in our lives.
It was in the late 1990’s when she and her husband first learned about the special needs services at then JFS while looking for resources for one of their three sons. While she points out that she didn’t “grow up in an Associated family,” she explains that “because of our personal journey with social services and my knowledge of how strong and deep and rich the services were at JFS, I knew I wanted to be part of that.”
So, she got involved with everything she could, chairing tasks forces on adoption and Holocaust Survivors, as well as serving on the Resource Services Committee, which was the precursor to today’s Planning and Resource Development Committee. In 2002, she joined the JFS board, and now, 15 years later, she has ascended to the presidency of JCS.
“The work I’ve done in the Associated System highlights, for me, how good JCS performs on so many levels. Learning what makes a good organization has made me more proud of JCS because we are already doing so many things right. The way we provide services, the way our lay leaders work with our professionals, and the way we operate is a model for the system.
“I love the work that JCS does,” Magat continues, “and I’m proud to bring my passion to an agency that is a strong, critical part of our Baltimore Jewish Community.”
She and her husband Aaron, a physician, both grew up in Baltimore and raised their three sons here. Jordan, 26, works for a hospital foundation in Chicago. Josh, 24, attends a day program serving adults with Autism and has been a recipient of services throughout the Associated System, and 20 year old Cole, a rising junior, attends the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
